Chestnut is a plant native to south-eastern Europe and prefers soils of volcanic origin. It can be seen in Mortisa, the high district of Lugo Vicentino, in the range of around 500 meters above sea level with southern exposure and limited rainfall. The presence of "maronari" of over 500 years of age consists the evidence of an ideal combination of soil and climate and an undoubted specialization in agriculture.
For this purpose a still crucial moment of comparison is the annual Chestnut Exhibition in Mortisa, which on the third Sunday in each October since 1975 has institutionalized the traditional time of celebration after the harvest, and which culminates with the awarding of the “Maron de Oro”.
The most sought-after characteristic is the integrity of the fruit and no film inside the pulp. It may be of a smaller size, but has to be unique.
