The identification of the period of construction of the church of Saint Agata is based on a document of 753 which speaks of the gift of real places "uxta fluvium Astagum" by the Lombard Duke Anselmo to the Benedictine monastery of Nonantola.
The church is built in open countryside on the edge of a deep and characteristic depression, where the stream of Astico flows. It is oriented to the east like all primitive churches, it has a rectangular building with a probable burial area. It is a rough construction without artistic elements; a poor church for poor Christians; but also one of the oldest ones in the area. For Cogollo it is the cradle of their Christian faith, indeed it has always been considered as the first community church.
